Hand-finished acetate and titanium frames with polarised lenses. Made in small runs, built to outlast the season.
Materials
Acetate frames are milled from a solid sheet rather than injected, then tumbled for nine hours in wooden drums. It takes longer and it is why the hinge area has no visible seam. Acetate is cotton-based and warms to the skin instead of staying cold against it.
Titanium frames are drawn wire, not cast. Drawn metal holds its shape after a season in a coat pocket; cast metal work-hardens and eventually snaps at the bend. It is the more expensive way to do it and the reason those frames weigh under twenty grams.
Lenses are CR-39 or polycarbonate depending on the frame, all UV400 — 100% of UVA and UVB, whatever the tint. A dark lens with no UV filter is worse than no sunglasses, because the pupil opens behind it. More on lenses.
Why small runs
A run is forty to two hundred pairs. Small enough to use a material because it is right rather than because there is a container of it, small enough that a shape can be retired when it stops being good.
It also means things sell out and stay sold out. Retired runs stay in the shop, marked sold out, rather than quietly disappearing.
